Approaching the Homecoming Exodus: Online Transportation and Car Rental Businesses Flooded with Orders

Online transportation and car rental businesses are starting to be flooded with orders from people preparing for their homecoming trips. As a result, fares have jumped by up to 30 percent, while business actors are confused about finding additional fleets to meet the high demand.

Data from several online transportation platforms shows a 200 percent increase in intercity travel bookings compared to regular days. Meanwhile, the car rental association notes that vehicle occupancy rates have reached 90 percent for the period from H-7 to H+7 of Eid, far exceeding available capacity.

Harry Yulianto, a Digital Business Expert from STIE YPUP Makassar, explains that this phenomenon is an annual pattern that is strengthening along with the post-pandemic economic recovery. “Homecoming is a sacred, non-negotiable moment. People are willing to dig deeper into their pockets to be able to gather with their families. This is what causes the surge in demand and price increases,” he told.

According to Harry, the confusion among business actors in finding additional fleets is caused by several factors. First, the limited number of vehicles fit for operation due to the high safety and comfort standards demanded by consumers. Second, the high cost of cross-regional vehicle rental, which makes private car owners reluctant to lease their vehicles for long-distance homecoming trips. Third, competition with large companies that have more fleets and stronger capital.

“Small and medium enterprises in this sector are indeed struggling. On one hand, demand is high; on the other hand, supply is limited. They have to think creatively so as not to miss the momentum,” Harry explained.

Harry recommends several strategies for car rental and online transportation businesses to overcome this situation:

First, collaborate with private vehicle owners. “In the era of the sharing economy, private car owners can become partners. Create a profit-sharing scheme that is attractive and provides vehicle security guarantees. Digital platforms can facilitate this,” he suggested.

Second, optimize the existing fleet. Harry advises business actors to maximize the use of their vehicles through shifting systems and strict schedule management. “Don’t let any vehicle sit idle. Every unit must move and generate income,” he emphasized.

Third, utilize technology for efficiency. According to Harry, digital-based fleet management applications can help business actors monitor vehicle positions, maintenance schedules, and driver performance in real-time. “With technology, one person can manage dozens of vehicles. This increases operational efficiency,” he said.

Fourth, offer bundling services. Harry gave an example: business actors could collaborate with other service providers such as travel insurance, tour packages, or accommodations. “Homecoming consumers don’t only need vehicles, but also protection and accommodation. If you can provide a complete package, your selling point will increase,” he added.

Despite the price surge, Harry reminds business actors to maintain service quality. “Price increases must be balanced with improved service. Don’t let consumers pay a high price but get a dirty vehicle or a reckless driver. Reputation is everything in the age of online reviews,” he concluded. With thorough preparation and the right strategies, transportation business actors can utilize the homecoming momentum to achieve maximum profits while building long-term customer loyalty.


Jelang Arus Mudik: Bisnis Transportasi Online dan Rental Mobil Mulai Kebanjiran Pesanan

Bisnis transportasi online dan rental mobil mulai kebanjiran pesanan dari masyarakat yang bersiap melakukan perjalanan mudik. Dampaknya, tarif melonjak hingga 30 persen, sementara para pelaku usaha kebingungan mencari armada tambahan untuk memenuhi tingginya permintaan.

Data dari sejumlah platform transportasi online menunjukkan peningkatan pemesanan perjalanan antarkota mencapai 200 persen dibanding hari biasa. Sementara itu, asosiasi rental mobil mencatat tingkat okupansi kendaraan sudah mencapai 90 persen untuk periode H-7 hingga H+7 Lebaran, jauh melampaui kapasitas yang tersedia.

Harry Yulianto, Pakar Bisnis Digital dari STIE YPUP Makassar, menjelaskan bahwa fenomena ini adalah pola tahunan yang semakin menguat seiring pemulihan ekonomi pascapandemi. “Mudik adalah momen sakral yang tidak bisa ditawar. Masyarakat rela merogoh kocek lebih dalam demi bisa berkumpul dengan keluarga. Ini yang menyebabkan lonjakan permintaan dan kenaikan harga,” ujarnya.

Menurut Harry, kebingungan pelaku usaha dalam mencari armada tambahan disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor. Pertama, terbatasnya jumlah kendaraan yang layak operasi karena tingginya standar keselamatan dan kenyamanan yang diminta konsumen. Kedua, tingginya biaya sewa kendaraan antar daerah yang membuat pemilik mobil pribadi enggan menyewakan kendaraannya untuk mudik jarak jauh. Ketiga, persaingan dengan perusahaan besar yang memiliki armada lebih banyak dan modal lebih kuat.

“Pelaku usaha kecil dan menengah di sektor ini memang sedang struggle. Di satu sisi permintaan tinggi, di sisi lain pasokan terbatas. Mereka harus berpikir kreatif agar tidak kehilangan momentum,” jelas Harry.

Harry merekomendasikan beberapa strategi bagi pelaku usaha rental mobil dan transportasi online untuk mengatasi situasi ini:

Pertama, kolaborasi dengan pemilik kendaraan pribadi. “Di era ekonomi berbagi (sharing economy), pemilik mobil pribadi bisa menjadi mitra. Buatlah skema bagi hasil yang menarik dan jaminan keamanan kendaraan. Platform digital bisa memfasilitasi ini,” sarannya.

Kedua, optimasi armada yang ada. Harry menyarankan agar pelaku usaha memaksimalkan penggunaan kendaraan yang dimiliki dengan sistem shifting dan manajemen jadwal yang ketat. “Jangan sampai ada kendaraan menganggur. Setiap unit harus bergerak dan menghasilkan,” tegasnya.

Ketiga, manfaatkan teknologi untuk efisiensi. Menurut Harry, aplikasi manajemen armada berbasis digital dapat membantu pelaku usaha memantau posisi kendaraan, jadwal perawatan, dan kinerja sopir secara real-time. “Dengan teknologi, satu orang bisa mengelola puluhan kendaraan. Ini meningkatkan efisiensi operasional,” ujarnya.

Keempat, berikan layanan bundling. Harry mencontohkan, pelaku usaha bisa bekerja sama dengan penyedia jasa lain seperti asuransi perjalanan, paket wisata, atau penginapan. “Konsumen mudik tidak hanya butuh kendaraan, tapi juga perlindungan dan akomodasi. Jika Anda bisa menyediakan paket lengkap, nilai jual Anda akan naik,” tambahnya.

Meski harga melonjak, Harry mengingatkan pelaku usaha untuk tetap menjaga kualitas layanan. “Kenaikan harga harus diimbangi dengan peningkatan pelayanan. Jangan sampai konsumen membayar mahal tapi mendapatkan kendaraan kotor atau sopir ugal-ugalan. Reputasi adalah segalanya di era ulasan online,” pungkasnya.

Dengan persiapan matang dan strategi tepat, para pelaku usaha transportasi dapat memanfaatkan momentum mudik untuk meraih keuntungan maksimal sekaligus membangun loyalitas pelanggan jangka panjang.
