Micro-credentials are certifications that demonstrate proficiency in specific areas, ranging from data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to cross-cultural communication. Unlike traditional academic degrees that take years to complete, micro-credentials can be earned in weeks or months through online learning platforms, training institutions, or even university-industry partnerships.
According to Kunto Wibisono, a Human Capital Management expert based in Yogyakarta, this shift cannot be overlooked by new graduates. “Companies today don’t just ask, ‘Where did you go to university?’ They more often ask, ‘What can you actually do on day one?’ Micro-credentials answer industry’s demand for work-ready talent,” he said.
Kunto added that micro-credentials hold extra value because they are typically designed in collaboration with industry. “When a fresh graduate attaches a micro-credential from Google, Microsoft, or an accredited platform, it signals that they have passed competency tests aligned with real-world workplace standards. This shortens the adaptation period that companies often complain about,” he explained.
Data from several recruitment platforms show that including micro-credentials on a CV can increase the chance of landing an interview by up to 30 percent compared to candidates who rely solely on academic diplomas. This trend is gaining momentum alongside accelerated digitalization and the demand for efficiency across various sectors.
Kunto cautioned fresh graduates not to misunderstand the trend. “Micro-credentials are not a substitute for formal education, but rather a complement. The foundation of critical thinking and the ability to learn independently must still be built through higher education. However, in this era of disruption, the combination of an academic degree and micro-credentials is the most competitive formula,” he stressed.
For universities, this phenomenon presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Several universities in Indonesia have begun adopting stackable credential systems, where accumulated micro-credentials can be converted into course credits or even accelerate the duration of study. Meanwhile, for job seekers, the time has come to focus not only on earning a degree but also on building a verified portfolio of skills.

Jika dulu gelar sarjana dianggap sebagai tiket emas menuju karier, kini perusahaan mulai melirik bukti kompetensi yang lebih spesifik dan terukur. Fenomena micro-credential atau kredensial mikro semakin menjadi perbincangan hangat di kalangan pencari kerja dan praktisi sumber daya manusia.
Micro-credential adalah sertifikasi singkat yang membuktikan penguasaan seseorang terhadap keterampilan tertentu, mulai dari analisis data, kecerdasan buatan (AI), hingga komunikasi lintas budaya. Berbeda dengan gelar akademik tradisional yang memakan waktu bertahun-tahun, micro-credential bisa diperoleh dalam hitungan pekan atau bulan melalui platform pembelajaran daring, lembaga pelatihan, atau bahkan kerja sama industri dengan universitas.
Menurut Kunto Wibisono, pakar Human Capital Management asal Yogyakarta, pergeseran ini tidak bisa diabaikan oleh para lulusan baru. “Perusahaan saat ini tidak hanya bertanya, ‘Di mana kamu kuliah?’, tetapi lebih sering bertanya, ‘Apa yang bisa kamu kerjakan secara langsung?’ Micro-credential menjadi jawaban atas kebutuhan industri akan tenaga kerja yang siap pakai,” ujarnya.
Kunto menambahkan bahwa micro-credential memiliki nilai lebih karena umumnya dirancang bersama industri. “Ketika seorang fresh graduate melampirkan sertifikat micro-credential dari Google, Microsoft, atau platform terakreditasi lainnya, itu menandakan bahwa ia telah melewati uji kompetensi yang sesuai dengan standar dunia kerja riil. Ini mengurangi waktu adaptasi yang biasanya menjadi keluhan perusahaan,” jelasnya.
Data dari sejumlah platform rekrutmen mencatat, pencantuman micro-credential dalam CV dapat meningkatkan peluang panggilan wawancara hingga 30 persen dibandingkan kandidat yang hanya mengandalkan ijazah akademik. Tren ini semakin menguat seiring dengan percepatan digitalisasi dan tuntutan efisiensi di berbagai sektor.
Kunto mengingatkan agar para fresh graduate tidak salah kaprah. “Micro-credential bukan pengganti pendidikan formal, melainkan pelengkap. Fondasi berpikir kritis dan kemampuan belajar mandiri tetap harus dibangun melalui pendidikan tinggi. Namun di era disrupsi ini, kombinasi antara gelar akademik dan kredensial mikro adalah formula yang paling kompetitif,” pungkasnya.
Bagi perguruan tinggi, fenomena ini menjadi tantangan sekaligus peluang. Beberapa universitas di Indonesia mulai mengadopsi sistem stackable credentials, di mana micro-credential yang diakumulasi dapat dikonversi menjadi mata kuliah atau bahkan mempercepat masa studi. Sementara bagi pencari kerja, saatnya tidak hanya mengejar ijazah, tetapi juga membangun portofolio keterampilan yang terverifikasi.
