“Dark Factory”: A Human-Free Factory Producing 1 Smartphone per Second

WIN Media, Makassar, 22/3/2026 – Xiaomi has unveiled a groundbreaking manufacturing facility known as a “dark factory,” a fully automated plant that operates without any human workers on the production floor. Located in Beijing, the factory can assemble one smartphone every second, running nonstop 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Spanning tens of thousands of square meters, the facility relies on a combination of industrial robots, artificial intelligence (AI), precision sensors, and real‑time data analytics. Unlike conventional automation, the AI system does not simply follow commands—it can detect anomalies, adjust processes, and correct errors autonomously without human intervention.

Because the factory requires no lighting or worker‑focused facilities, it operates in complete darkness, significantly reducing energy consumption typically allocated for illumination and employee support systems. With an annual output reaching tens of millions of units, Xiaomi’s move is poised to reshape global manufacturing paradigms.

Implications for Workforce and Efficiency

Harry Yulianto, a digital business expert from STIE YPUP Makassar, noted that the dark factory represents a fundamental shift in industrial operations.

“This goes beyond cost efficiency—it is a complete transformation of production governance. The removal of human workers from the factory floor requires us to rethink employment structures, vocational education, and future industrial policies,” Harry.

He added that while such technology will create new opportunities in digital skills and systems engineering, it may also displace repetitive jobs in the short term. “Governments and businesses must prepare a more adaptive ecosystem to keep pace with this change,” he emphasized.

Xiaomi has yet to disclose the investment value of the facility, but the initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to embed AI and automation across its supply chain.

“Dark Factory”: Pabrik Tanpa Manusia, Produksi 1 Smartphone per Detik
