WIN Media, Opinion – Amid the hustle and bustle of the digital revolution, nearly all business players are racing to adopt cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and the metaverse, driven by the anxiety of falling behind competitors (Verhoef et al., 2021). Yet beneath the fanfare of technology adoption, a worrying phenomenon emerges: many businesses collapse because they rush their transformation, forgetting that digital represents only one side of the true business coin.
This article invites readers to view business as a complete trilogy—finding balance between digital as the locomotive of speed, fundamentals as the sturdy tracks, and philosophy as the engineer providing direction, because only through the harmony of these three elements can a business not only grow quickly but also remain strong and relevant in the long term.
Digital: The Captivating Fast Face
In the contemporary business landscape, digital manifests as speed, efficiency, limitless reach, and data power—it is the “skin” or captivating modern face of every company. However, many entrepreneurs fall into the mistaken expectation that simply having a website, being active on social media, or adopting sophisticated software automatically guarantees business success (Kane, 2024).
In reality, digital without a strong foundation is like a high-speed locomotive racing without tracks—impressive to look at, but certain to derail and never reach its destination.
The failure story of startups like Quibi, which invested billions in advanced technology yet collapsed within months, proves that digital sophistication means nothing without being supported by a fundamental understanding of consumer behavior and a healthy business model.
Fundamentals: The Sturdy Roots
Fundamentals are the timeless classic foundation of business—encompassing quality products, sound financial management, excellent customer service, and efficient operations—which serve as the “tracks” for the digital locomotive’s momentum.
Ironically, these fundamental aspects are often overlooked because they seem “slow” and lack the glamour of instant digitalization, leading many entrepreneurs to be more tempted to care for the skin rather than strengthen the bones (Teece, 2023). No matter how sophisticated the algorithms you use, if the product is poor or cash flow is chaotic, the business will still crumble like a building without a solid foundation.
It is time for us to “return home” and nurture the roots: digitalization should be a tool to strengthen fundamentals, not replace them—because strong tracks determine how far the locomotive can travel safely.
Philosophy: The Soul That Provides Direction
Philosophy is the “why” behind every business activity—it encompasses values, long-term vision, ethics, and contribution to society, serving as the “spirit” that moves all business organs while simultaneously acting as the engineer determining the journey’s destination.
Amid the relentless flow of information and constantly shifting trends like waves, philosophy becomes a moral compass preventing businesses from straying onto dangerous shortcuts (Hollensbe et al., 2024). With a strong philosophy, companies have the courage to say “no” to unethical short-term profits or to adhere to core values even when the market is caught up in certain trends.
The impact is tangible: businesses with soul tend to be more loved by customers because they radiate authenticity and build trust—an invaluable asset that cannot be bought with even the most expensive digital advertising.
Finding Balance
Imagine digital as a powerful locomotive capable of speeding forward, fundamentals as the sturdy tracks that support and direct its motion, and philosophy as the wise engineer holding full control over the journey’s destination.
All three must proceed in perfect harmony: strong tracks will make the locomotive’s progress stable and secure from shocks, while the engineer holding fast to a moral compass will ensure the train does not plunge into the abyss simply because it is tempted by beautiful but misleading scenery along the way (Schaltegger et al., 2023).
Sustainable Harmony
The future of business does not belong to those with the most advanced technology, but to those capable of harmonizing digital speed, fundamental strength, and philosophical depth—a harmony that determines who will survive and who will be eliminated (Bharadwaj & Noble, 2024).
Therefore, pause for a moment amid the chaos of transformation, reflect, and reexamine your business “trilogy”: is your locomotive racing too fast without sturdy tracks, or is your engineer losing direction at the crossroads?
