Viral! Gen Z’s “Learning While Lying Down” Method, Is It Effective?

WIN Media, Makassar, 3/3/2026 – Social media is currently being flooded by a new trend among Generation Z students: the “learning while lying down” method. This technique, often showcased on TikTok and Instagram Reels, depicts students studying for exams while lying on their beds, mattresses, or even the floor, complete with blankets and pillows.

But behind its viral and comedic appeal, a big question arises: is this method actually effective for absorbing lessons, or is it just another form of digital procrastination?

Harry Yulianto, an education observer from STIE YPUP Makassar, views this phenomenon as a natural adaptation of learning styles to the modern era. However, he warns against confusing comfort with a lack of focus.

“Gen Z is a generation that prioritizes comfort and authenticity. For them, a relaxed atmosphere can actually boost dopamine, which triggers creativity. But there’s a fine line between comfortable learning and lazy learning,” Harry explained.

According to Harry, this method can be effective only if it is supported by strong time management. “If you’re lying down but your brain is still active—taking notes, listening to podcasts, or watching educational videos—that’s fine. The problem is when ‘rebahan’ just becomes an excuse to look at the material before actually falling asleep,” he added.

Teacher’s Perspective: The Danger of “Comfort Zone”
A different perspective comes from Ahmad Arfah, a teacher at MAN 1 Makassar. In daily practice, he often encounters students who brag about studying while lying down, only to fail to absorb the lesson content.

“From a teacher’s perspective, I see that the learning environment greatly influences the brain’s encoding process. Studying in bed tends to blur the lines between rest and study. When exams come, their memory recall is weak because the brain was in ‘relax mode’ when inputting the information,” Arfah explained.

He recommends a middle ground: the “comfortable corner” concept. “If you want to be comfortable, don’t study on your bed. Create a special corner in your room with an ergonomic bean bag or a floor mattress, but keep it separate from your sleeping area. And most importantly, put your phone away. If you’re lying down while scrolling through TikTok, that’s not studying, that’s just scrolling while lying down,” he said.

Tips for Effective “Rebahan” Learning
Both sources agreed that the learning method is not as important as the output. Here are tips for implementing “rebahan learning” effectively:

  1. Set a Time Limit: Don’t let study time turn into nap time.
  2. Active Learning: Avoid just staring at books; take notes, highlight, or discuss with friends via voice call.
  3. Upright Position: Avoid lying completely flat. Prop your head up with a pillow to keep your eyes and brain alert.

Viral!

Perspektif Guru: Bahaya “Zona Nyaman”
